Colville Estate

Supporting one of Hackney’s largest regeneration programmes

GKR Scaffolding was appointed by Kier to deliver the scaffolding package for Phase 2C of the London Borough of Hackney's landmark Colville Estate regeneration

One of the council’s largest and most ambitious renewal programmes, the masterplan will ultimately deliver 925 new homes alongside improved public spaces and community facilities, transforming the estate for existing and future residents.

Phase 2C will provide 93 new mixed-tenure homes across two residential plots, including 52 social rent homes for returning residents and local people in housing need, 19 shared ownership homes and 22 private residences. The project continues the wider regeneration programme, replacing outdated housing with modern, sustainable homes that better serve the local community.

A collaborative approach to safer, smarter access

Working in partnership with Kier, GKR introduced a fully engineered Layher system scaffold solution that delivered significant advantages over traditional tube and fitting scaffolding. Through early collaboration, our team demonstrated how the modular system would improve safety, programme certainty and productivity throughout construction.

Kier’s progressive approach and willingness to adopt modern methods of temporary works allowed GKR to develop a scaffold design that better supported the project’s construction sequence while providing safe and efficient access for multiple trades.

The Layher system offers faster erection and dismantling than conventional scaffolding, reducing time on site and helping to maintain programme. Its modular design also creates a more consistent method of construction, minimising loose fittings and improving safety for operatives during both erection and day-to-day use.

Delivering efficiency through innovative system scaffolding

The scaffold was designed to maximise productivity across the project while supporting the complex logistical requirements of a live residential development.

The Layher system’s high loading capacity enabled the seamless integration of hoist run-offs and temporary access requirements within the scaffold structure, providing efficient movement of materials and personnel throughout the build.

As brickwork progressed, the scaffold could be adapted quickly to suit changing site requirements, reducing downtime for follow-on trades and allowing the construction programme to progress efficiently. This flexibility provided a significant advantage over traditional scaffolding methods, supporting both productivity and programme certainty.

Scope of works

• Approximately 8,000m² of Layher system scaffold.
• Around 800 linear metres of Niko Scaffold Runway system installed on a strike-and-shift basis.
• Curved track profile sections incorporated to facilitate the lifting of ornate stonework directly from outside the scaffold to the building façade, significantly reducing manual handling.
• Three hoist run-offs integrated into the scaffold design.
• Five Layher system staircases complete with Protect Panels and lockable access doors, providing secure access throughout the project.

Building better communities through innovation

The Colville Estate regeneration demonstrates how modern scaffolding systems can play an important role in supporting major residential developments. By adopting Layher system scaffolding, GKR has delivered a safer, more efficient temporary works solution that improves productivity while supporting Kier’s programme objectives.

Delivering the next phase of regeneration

As the Colville Estate masterplan continues to transform one of Hackney’s most significant housing developments, GKR Scaffolding is proud to support Kier with temporary works solutions that prioritise safety, efficiency and quality. By combining collaborative planning with innovative system scaffolding, we are helping to deliver new homes and stronger communities for generations to come.
